Lower Waitaki Irrigation Company chairman Chris Dennison is encouraged by the interest shown in extending the delivery of water.

The company, which provides irrigation water to about 19,500ha on the Waitaki Plains and surrounding hills, is considering making water available to properties as far afield as Totara and Weston.

About 60 people attended a meeting on Thursday night to assess interest from property owners in the Ridge Rd, Airedale, Ardgowan, Weston, Whiterocks Rd and Totara areas.

Mr Dennison was pleased with the turnout, saying it covered almost all the substantial land-holders in the areas.

While it was still very early days, everyone registered their interest and there was a "good degree of enthusiasm" to look at the project and what could be achieved.

Different pods, or groups, have been formed, with each group having two representatives who will contact people who were not at the meeting and small landholders, so they could be given more information.
