Four Arrowtown firefighters are making a final push to reach their target of $10,000 for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.

Rob Andrews, Terry Youngman, Chris Tate and John Hillock have entered the Skytower Challenge in Auckland on Saturday but are still short of their fundraising target.

They, along with more than 400 other firefighters, will climb the 1029 internal steps of the Sky Tower, wearing about 27kg of firefighting clothing and breathing apparatus, to raise funds for the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.

Mr Andrews said they had raised $8400 so far and had only three days to raise the $1600 shortfall.

"We are asking for donations from businesses and individuals in the final few days just so we can reach our target.

Any company or personal donation would be very much appreciated, even if it is just a small one, as every bit helps.

It's a good cause," he said.

The men had been training for the challenge three times a week since October, including pacing up and down the steps at One Mile Reserve.

"I'm over training.

It will be hard for us because we don't have tall buildings around here to practice in.

The guys in cities have been using tall hotels, which we don't have access to," he said.

On a recent trip to Auckland Mr Andrews donned his gear and ran up the flights of stairs at his hotel and found it quite different from running up the steps at One Mile.

The men have raised $8400 through a bingo night, quiz night and demonstrations at the Arrowtown Autumn Festival.

He hoped an online auction of two nights' accommodation for two people at the Pounamu Apartments would raise some more money.

The auction closes tomorrow.
