A charity which raises funds for Christchurch citizens affected by earthquakes while attempting to break world records hosts a rock concert in the Queenstown Events Centre on September 23.

World Record for Charity is organising World Record Rockfest with the aim of raising money for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

Wellington four-man band Mercury Crowe, which entertained during the Queenstown Winter Festival, will headline with support from quartet Diesel Phoenix and quintet the Dirty Sweets, both of Auckland. Multi-cultural Queenstown trio Paranoid Circle opens the show.

The charity, formerly known as World Charity for Christchurch, was behind an eight-day attempt to break the record for "longest individual radio DJ marathon" in April.

Scott "Snap" Campbell, of Christchurch, said he broadcasted continually for 185 hours, two hours more than the record, but patches in the recorded audio meant Guinness World Records could not award the title.

Undaunted, Mr Campbell said he would make the attempt again and would attempt to break another Guinness World Record at Rockfest - "the largest funeral for a fictional object" for "the One Ring" from The Lord of the Rings.

"The One Ring had an undeniably huge effect on that fictional world and I really don't think that's ever been formally recognised.

Love it or hate it, every object deserves a proper send-off."

Mr Campbell said he lived in Queenstown for a while after the earthquakes and hoped its international nature would mean more support for the show and exposure for the bands.

• World Record Rockfest begins in the Queenstown Events Centre on Friday, September 23, at 8pm. Tickets cost $30 via Ticketek, or $35 at the door. R18.
