Queenstown's newest school will hold its first social evening in November, with mountaineer and expedition leader Peter Hillary set to make the trek south to support Remarkables Primary School.

Billed as an inspirational evening of brilliant anecdotes and tales of world-beating achievements, Mr Hillary will be guest presenter at the November 12 function - Glittering Peaks.

The school hall will be transformed with a snow and ice theme in keeping with the school's mountain peaks logo and affinity with its natural environment.

School principal Debbie Dickson said Mr Hillary was the "perfect" speaker for the inaugural event, to be a "huge celebration" of the school's first year of operation.

"It's the perfect chance for current and future parents, as well as members of the local community, to get together for a very fun, social night.

"Peter is a huge drawcard in his own right, but we'll also have live and silent auctions, some great surprise giveaways, entertainment and a band.

"It's really the chance for everyone to let their hair down before Christmas and have a really good night out.

"Our parents' association is putting a lot of hard work and time into giving it the `wow' factor."

Ms Dickson said money raised from the evening would go towards buying much-needed sunshades for the school surrounds and playground, and resources and books for the learning centre.

"Even though we're a new school, we still have to find funds for essentials such as these that weren't included in our establishment budget."

Tickets for the event cost $50 per person and include a welcome drink and continuous canapes and food platters.

Several tickets had already been sold and some local businesses which were owned by parents of children at the school were planning to use it as their firms' Christmas party, Ms Dickson said.

"Peter Hillary is an amazing speaker and an inspiration to all of us.

"We're keeping the details under wraps for now, but he's also agreed to spend a very special day with our children, which really will be something for us all to remember in years to come."
