Football: Teenage NZ star signs new West Brom contract

Teenage New Zealand striker Chris Wood has signed a new 3-1/2 year contract with his English Championship club West Bromwich Albion.

The All White, who turned 18 this month, had signed a two-year deal with Albion in May, but the club said on its website it had moved to reward him for excellent progress in the past seven months.

"I'm really happy to have been given a new contract. The club said they would reward me if I performed and they have kept their word," the Aucklander said.

"The length of contract gives me real stability at the club. It also makes me want to work even harder to succeed here and help the club progress."

Wood debuted for Albion late last season in the Premier League before they were relegated to the lower Championship division, and has had five starts and 13 substitute appearances this season.

He is a member of the New Zealand squad that reached next year's World Cup finals in South Africa.
