Beyond Reason was soon clear in the lead and won by 12 and a-quarter lengths.
Beyond Reason ran the 2000m in 2.40.1, a grass-track record for trotters of all ages at Oamaru.
The record for older horses was 2.40.6 set by Earl Of Frolic last year.
The 3yr-old record was 2.42.7 set by Cutie Patootie.
Beyond Reason is trained at Oamaru by Phil Williamson for Oamaru breeders Bill and Shirley Stevenson.
Beyond Reason has the New Zealand Hambletonian at Ashburton on February 12 as his next assignment.
The Williamson stable also has Springbank Sam aiming at the Hambletonian.
Beyond Reason finished sixth after leaving stride early in his only start at 2.
He is by Sundon and the third foal of Beyond The Stars, who won four races and finished second 16 times when trained by Williamson for the Stevensons.
Her first foal, Fineansunny, a sister to Beyond Reason, won a minor race at Gore. She is now at stud.
Beyond Reason was among three winners yesterday for junior driver Matthew Williamson. He drove three winners at Forbury Park on Thursday night. Williamson has 34 wins this season. He is second among the junior drivers behind Dexter Dunn (111).
• Manhattan Rusty, winner of the Oamaru Cup, has overcome adversity.
"We gelded him in November 2009 and then his intestines dropped down and he had two major operations," Bruce Hutton, his Greendale trainer and part-owner, said.
He races Manhattan Rusty with Al Carter, of Delaware.
Manhattan Rusty was away from racing for 11 months and he returned in October. He has since had two wins and five placings in 10 starts.
• Neil Escott had his final meeting as chief stipendiary steward at Oamaru yesterday. scott (67) decided to time his retirement with the introduction of the new Racing Integrity Unit. tipendiary stewards will be required to work across the three codes - thoroughbred, harness and greyhound.
"I have had great support from trainers and drivers but it is time to leave the job to the young guns," Escott said.
He was a stipendiary steward for 37 years, the last 11 as chief.
A presentation was made to Escott by the Oamaru Harness Racing Club.
Scott Wallis has been appointed a stipendiary steward, based in Christchurch.
A former successful junior driver, he has been an assistant harness racing steward in the Waikato area.
