Ascot Park trainer Sean Bellew has one piece of advice for punters backing Sucre tomorrow - it will not be her fault if she fails to win.

Bellew lines up the Ishiguru mare in the $25,000 Fireside Cup tomorrow after he decided against another trip north following her impressive second behind Emerald Queen in the South Island Breeders' Stakes at Riccarton last Saturday.

Bellew's only concern is the short gap of seven days between races - the first time he has backed her up quickly in this campaign.

''She's had a road trip through to Christchurch but I feel that she's gone through the season where she won her first race in December and it's now March,'' he said yesterday.

''She's just seasoned enough to endure that turnaround.

''If it was earlier in the season, I wouldn't even contemplate it, but I think she's got just enough runs under the belt now to suggest that she is fortified enough to take the backing-up.

''So if she gets beaten . . . blame the trainer, not the horse.''

The 5yr-old returned to her paddock at Ascot Park on Sunday, and Bellew said her progress through the week had been positive.

''She ate up on Monday night and Tuesday. I gave her just a little bit of light work yesterday and today. She's showing signs that she's happy within herself.''

Sucre has earned the top weight of 59kg for tomorrow's 1400m assignment with jockey Jamie Bates on board, being six rating points above the next highest rated horse Chapel Star on 93.

''[The weight] is not an issue for her around Ascot. Jamie Bates knows the horse and he'll give her a kind trip and hopefully will just light her up at the right time.''

Bellew is likely to forgo his original plan of heading back to Riccarton for the $50,000 Easter Cup on April 5, and will instead aim the eight-race winner at the $30,000 open 1400m for fillies and mares at Riverton on April 19.

Bragging Rights is Bellew's representative in the $17,500 Wyndham Cup, although doubts remained whether he would take his place in the 2100m feature.

''He's got a wee bit of filling in a fetlock this morning and I didn't work him, so I'll get a vet to him . . . and make sure he's fit to race,'' Bellew said.

The Bubbly One (race 7) was very impressive stepping out of the maiden grade at Ascot Park on February 17, but Bellew fears the good weather might dry out the track too much from its rating of slow8 for the Postponed mare's liking.

''The track's dried quite well and the forecast is good so if she doesn't get amongst it this week, I wouldn't be too alarmed,'' he said.

''When the yield comes later on, she'll be a better type of mare for that.''

Marachel (race 3) has recovered from a cold which affected her at Ascot Park last month, and Bellew said he will ask Bates to ''ride her like we stole her'' - out in front.

''You'll get a better sight from her this weekend.''

Saperavious (race 10) is still a work in progress for Bellew as he tries to find the key to the Saperavi mare.

''I would say we've turned the lock, but the lock's not quite popped open.''
