Wijkstra’s first solo exhibition, entitled "My Happy Place", will be showcased at the Artsenta Pop-up Gallery from next Monday, July 28, to August 8.
While creating her art, Wijkstra spends hours cutting and sorting paper images to make a colour palette to suit her ideas, showing great attention to detail in her paper mosaics. She also draws, colours and paints some of her images.
Wijkstra said coming to Artsenta had "reawakened what I used to love as a child, like drawing, mosaics, glitter, colours, shapes, animals and nature".
"That inspires my pieces and the title ‘My Happy Place’ — I’m neuro-diverse and that adds something unique to my creative process," she said.
Wijkstra is a valued member of the Artsenta community, advocating for the other artists in her role in the Artist Voice group, championing ideas, suggestions and concerns from the artists to make Artsenta creative, fun and safe for all.
In her first solo exhibition, which features 16 drawings and four paper mosaics, Wijkstra is excited to be showcasing the pieces she has been working on for the past two years.
