International organist to play popular melodies

International concert organist Hans Hielscher will return to Dunedin this weekend to present a programme of "entertaining evergreen melodies".

Hielscher will perform works from places including the Scottish Highlands and Egypt in concert this Saturday, from 3pm, on the historic Hill, Norman and Beard organ at Iona Church, in Port Chalmers.

In a statement, Hielscher said Saturday’s programme would be a popular mixture of melodies, such as Highland Cathedral, Ketelby’s In the mystic land of Egypt and How great thou art.

Hielscher has been organist at the Marktkirche in Wiesbaden (Lutheran Cathedral of Nassau), Germany, since 1979, and has presented nearly 4000 organ recitals around the globe.

He has been featured on radio and TV broadcasts, has 22 CD recordings and has composed 60 works for organ.

He is a frequent visitor to New Zealand.

The organ at Iona Church was built in 1854 for the chapel of Sherborne School in Dorset, United Kingdom, and was acquired for the church in 1929.
