Workforce Central Dunedin marketing and communications specialist Jessica de Heij said after making sure all the children were equipped with high-vis bibs and hard hats they were given a tour of the construction site by Ceres site manager Dan Fallow, while teachers and parents stood close by.
The young children were able to get up close to heavy machinery including ditch diggers and articulated dump trucks, and were given an explanation of what will be happening on the site as the new hospital begins to emerge over the next few years.
Workforce Central Dunedin operations manager Raymond Clark said this was the first of a number of school visits it was planning.
The aim was to "plant the seeds" in young people about considering a career in construction.
"So we are just using the build of the hospital to inspire kids."
As the biggest health infrastructure project in New Zealand he hoped people in the community and pupils at school felt engaged and excited as construction of the new hospital progressed.
