Allegations over stolen cigarettes led a teenager to hold a knife at the throat of another teen, police say.

Police were called to a Dunedin Child Youth and Family home in Maori Hill and arrested a 17-year-old who allegedly held the knife at the throat of another resident, Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said.

The teenager is to appear in the Dunedin District Court later.

• Police say a Dunedin woman assaulted a female acquaintance following a dispute over a man this week.

Snr Sgt Benn said the victim was known to her assailant, who allegedly punched her in the face and pulled some of her hair out.

The 21-year-old has been charged with assault with intent to injure, and intentional damage and appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday.

She was remanded in custody by consent without plea and will appear again next month.

• An intoxicated student was spotted on the roof of the former Gardens Tavern early yesterday.

Campus Watch reported the incident to police, and "we warned him that such behaviour while intoxicated could be injurious to his health", Snr Sgt Benn said.

The 17-year-old first-year student has been referred to the University of Otago proctor.

The former pub is being converted into a $3.3 million study centre.

• A St Kilda fire appliance was called to attend a couch fire in Castle St at 3.30am yesterday, the first of two callouts for the Fire Service early yesterday. It was called back to the street just over an hour later.

In that incident an alarm was activated when an empty pan was left on a stove at 4.30am.

Police were called following concerns unknown people had entered the unsecured home and put an empty pan on the stove, which set off the alarm.

Inquiries are continuing
