Return to two-way for Queen's Dr

The one-way section of Queens Dr in Dunedin, between Stuart St and City Rd, will be returned to two-way next month.

Council reserves and recreation planning acting team leader Dolina Lee said work to convert the section, in the city's Town Belt, to two-way was estimated to cost about $100,000.

Work would start between May 20 and 24 and the section of Queens Dr would be closed until work finished by mid to late June, Ms Lee said.

The upgrade included making changes to the traffic lights at the Stuart St and Queens Dr intersection to cater for two-lane traffic and to improve pedestrian safety by installing signal filters which would allow pedestrians to start crossing the road before vehicles got a green light.

Cycling detector pads would also be installed on the Queens Dr leg of the intersection, so when cyclists approached they would get a green light to allow them to pass through, she said.

The width of the road meant there was not enough room for two lanes and parked vehicles, so parking along this section of road would not be available from May 20. Fliers would be placed on vehicles parked in the area over the next fortnight, to ensure drivers were aware of the restrictions.

The upgrade comes after the council agreed in June last year to make the change when funds became available.

The section of road was turned into a one-way street in 2004, following safety concerns. But the change unintentionally created room for people to park along one side of the street, the council's community development committee heard last year.

Ms Lee said in a statement yesterday that it was now considered that the drive being one-way detracted from its ''purpose and enjoyment''.
