Council funding sought for events co-ordinator

An events co-ordinator is needed for the Waitaki District and the Waitaki District Council is being asked to find up to $75,000 a year to fund the position.

The Waitaki Development Board has asked the council to fund the position in its 2010-11 budget, a move that has been supported by the Otago Chamber of Commerce.

Tourism Waitaki manager Annabel Gudsell has told the council the board receives many inquiries from local event organisers for assistance in providing expertise to maximise opportunities for an event.

She said the whole community could use the expertise of an events co-ordinator, and there would be economic benefits for the district if one were appointed.

She said it would cost about $50,000 to fund the position, and another $25,000 in incidental and ongoing costs.
