Steam junk exhibition

Organisers of the inaugural Waitaki steam junk competition have decided to hold an exhibition of entries, due to the success of the event.

There were 66 entries in the Waitaki District Council-run competition, which challenged entrants to create something with only recyclable material or scrap.

The entries were on display at Totara Estate's Harvest Home Festival.

Organisers have asked the entrants to exhibit their entries in the Otago Daily Times Ink Box theatrette at the Opera House from April 14 to 23.

Meanwhile, a Steampunk swap meet will be held at Smiths Grainstore in the historic precinct on Saturday between midday and 3pm.

It is aimed at anyone who wants to brainstorm ideas for either the Steampunk fashion show and gala ball in June or the Steampunk exhibition in October.

"We know that there are people out there closeted in their sheds, garages and work rooms scheming away.

"They may benefit from some idea sharing and skills swapping, or have bits and pieces that they think a steampunker may find useful," one of the organisers, Helen Jansen, said.
