Two standout Wakatipu building projects have won awards at the Registered Master Builders southern region finals, held in Invercargill on Saturday.

The $17.3 million Remarkables Primary School, which opened in February last year, won the commercial and education project category awards for Central Otago construction firm Naylor Love Ltd.

Arrowtown firm AJ Saville Builder Ltd won the $2 million plus house of the year category for a property built on the Crown Range terrace, overlooking the Wakatipu Basin.

The southern regional building judges also awarded AJ Saville wins in the best kitchen, best bathroom, and best interior style and finish for the five-bedroom Crown Range terrace house.

The house, which features four bathrooms and two living spaces alongside its five bedrooms, was described as "stunning" by the awards judges.

The building was an architecturally exciting house, designed to cope well with an often-harsh environment, the judges said in a statement.

The house has a large living area with tremendous views, and features natural cedar and schist stone, particularly in the large open fireplace and chimney.

"There were some real difficulties with some of the detailing on the property, but it has been well-designed to cope with its environment," the judges said.

The Naylor Love-developed Remarkables Primary School, required the complete design and build of a fully serviced school for 460 pupils.

The buildings feature energy efficiency, which takes into account sun shading in the heat of the summer, while allowing natural light to penetrate the right areas of the building in winter, the judges said.

Key design aspects of the school are the 360 panoramic views and the shelter provided from prevailing winds.

"The architect and builder have created a functional and pleasant environment for the children to learn in," according to the judges'comments.

The 12 gold award winners from the southern region awards will be judged against the winners from the other 14 regions of the competition, to find the national finalists, which will be announced in early September.

The national Registered Master Builder awards take place in Auckland in November.
