Games funding 'close'

Winter Games New Zealand organisers are still banking on securing key funding for the event next year, but have turned their immediate focus to the Junior Snowboard and Freestyle World Championships to be hosted in Wanaka in August.

Winter Games NZ director Arthur Klap said they were "super close" to making an announcement about final funding needed to underwrite a second games.

He admitted securing the funding needed for the organisers to commit to a second Winter Games, had proceeded "slower than we want".

Mr Klap is scheduled for what he described as a "key" funding meeting in Wellington on Monday, before the Winter Games board of directors meets on Tuesday.

Funding for a second Winter Games has already come from local government, while sponsors had also come on board, after the success of the inaugural event last year, Mr Klap said.

Prime Minister John Key made a surprise announcement during the Queenstown Winter Festival last year when the Government gave $1 million for the first Winter Games.

It was unlikely a similar announcement would be made at the 2010 Winter Festival, Mr Klap said, but he was upbeat about the final funding hurdle to get Government backing.
