Swimming pool contract awarded

Work on the new changing rooms at the Milton Swimming Pool is due to begin in the next two weeks.

The Clutha District Council last week awarded the contract for construction of the new changing rooms to Milton-based Calder Stewart Industries Ltd.

The contract was for the construction of new male and female changing rooms, also introducing a unisex family changing room into the layout.

The upgrade followed a number of complaints that the previous changing rooms, which have since been demolished, were too cold and in a general state of disrepair.

CDC manager district assets Jules Witt said five tenders were received for the project, ranging in price from $562,800 to $653,000.

The contract was awarded for a sum of $599,978, and while Calder Stewart's tender was not the lowest, it was based on a 14-week construction period rather than a 20-week period, and therefore the best value option to council, he said.

The new changing rooms are expected to be completed by early December.
