Cycling: Spanish body bans former world champ

Former world road racing champion Igor Astarloa has received a two-year doping ban from the Spanish cycling federation.

The rider, who won the 2003 title, was suspended Wednesday for irregularities detected in his blood profile. He was also fined euro35,000.

Astarloa was one of five riders facing bans due to suspicious blood profiles in the "biological passport" program run by world governing body UCI. The UCI originally sought a four-year ban when the case was opened in June.

Astarloa, who retired at the end of last year, was fired by German team Milram in 2008 because of a suspicious blood test.
