The Aotearoa NZ Folk Alliance will host the fourth annual Ballads to Blues concert and showcase of New Zealand folk artists in Dunedin, hot on the heels of the 50th Whare Flat Folk Festival.

The concert, to be held on Saturday, January 3, from 8pm at Hanover Hall will also feature the second ANZFA Folk Music Awards.

Ballads to Blues concert organiser Mike Moroney said guest artists would be coming from around Te Waipounamu, Hamilton, and Ōtepoti, many of them involved in the festival.

The lineup will include Tasman group RD1, comprising Craig Denham, Nathan Torvic and Callie Crider; New Zealand’s long-standing "Queen of Tra" Chris Penman; and local songwriter Lara Rose.

"Ballads to Blues 2026 promises to be a one-out-of-the-box folk event for the new year," Mr Moroney said.

Houseband, the Dunedin Ceilidh Orchestra, will glue the evening together and food and drink will be continuously available.

Moroney said there would be six finalists competing across a range of award categories in the second annual ANZFA Folk Music Awards Ceremony, including Best Folk Album 2025, and Best Traditional, Original, Kiwiana and Americana albums judged by a panel.
