Classical reviews

> Great Organ Classics. Martin Souter (organ). Gift of Music CD.

Souter produces virtuoso sounds using the four keyboards and pedals of the magnificent English Romantic organ at Winchester Cathedral, England. The 13 tracks begin with the thrilling Toccata and Fugue in D minor by J.S. Bach, and close with a toccata from Symphony No.5 by Widor.

The sonic spectacular includes Wagner's The Ride of the Valkyries in full cry, Elgar's Nimrod and the finale of Handel's Royal Fireworks Music.

The "hits" continue with Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King and Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No.1. In quieter tones is Louis Vierne's appropriate Carillon de Westminster, but the stops come out for the traditional Battle Hymn of the Republic and a romp through Sousa's march The Stars and Stripes Forever.

Highlight: fast and furious organ music.

> Mother Tongue. Carolina Moon (vocals), Nigel Gavin (guitar), Roger Manins (soprano sax), etc. Ode CD.

A talented group presents 12 "songs from the medieval heart of Judeo Spain".

Carolina Moon is British singer Caroline Lynn, who debuted on the London jazz scene in the early '90s before moving to Australia and meeting her husband, New Zealand saxophonist Roger Manins. She has made several previous jazz or "world music" albums but here takes her voice and supporting team into exotic crossover fusion territory with Sephardic songs conveying deep emotional feelings.

Moon makes this ancient music sound contemporary, with vocal dexterity and nuances. There is an extract from a 16th-century English poem by John Donne delivered by the singer (with watery sound effects) and all the songs are translated in the booklet.

Highlight: Tres Hermanicas, standout song, fine backing.
