Meridian on lookout for property

Meridian is seeking property in Mosgiel for service sites, in preparation for its wind farm, Project Hayes on the Lammermoor Range.

Although the proposed $1.5 billion wind farm is still before the Environment Court, the company had been searching over "many months" for appropriate property in the area for storage facilities and staff housing, external relations manager Claire Shaw said.

"This is normal practice and part of how any good developer would work when dealing with such an important project."

Meridian had also been approached by organisations offering sites.

No commitments had been made at this stage, she said.

In 2006, the company bought a house on the corner of Riccarton Rd and State Highway 1, East Taieri.

The property's front garden would be landscaped to enable extra-long trucks carrying wind-turbine blades to turn more easily from State Highway 1 into Riccarton Rd.

It was not anticipated the house would be demolished and it might be used for staff housing, spokesman Alan Seay said at the time.

Ms Shaw also allayed public concern about a cabin built beside Old Dunstan Rd.

The temporary cabin was for consultants to use as a base while they carried out investigations, including topography of the potential site and geological technical studies.

"It's somewhere to get a cup of tea and go to the loo," Ms Shaw said, and was part of health and safety regulations.
