The Otago Daily Times year 9 and 10 Extra! current events quiz went down to the wire at Kaikorai Valley College last night.

With two rounds to go, just three points separated the top nine teams.

After a nail-biting finish, the John McGlashan 4 team of Akshay Sood (15), Mac Townsend (15) and Paddy Ou (14) took the honours, with 94 points out of a possible 100.

There were 69 teams from 11 Otago secondary schools entered in the Extra! quiz.

Questions included what has been banned from Australia since 1919? (New Zealand apples).

Which Auckland team won last year's NBL competition? (The Breakers).

What is happening on November 26? (The general election).

Which famous New Zealander has just had a mountain ridge named after them? (Sir Edmund Hillary).

John McGlashan 8 and Columba College 1 were second-equal, just a point behind the winner, with 93 points out of 100.
