Opera house to cost $10m

The Oamaru Opera House upgrade is expected to cost just over $10 million.

The project had been estimated at $9.7 million but a report to the Waitaki District Council's corporate services committee meeting this week showed the revised cost to be $10,142,000.

The project remained on schedule for the official opening in February, corporate services group manager Stephen Halliwell said.

Mr Halliwell expected that, as intended at the start of the project, the construction cost would be fully funded without ongoing debt.

The kitchen and bar had yet to be completed and the sound system was being installed.

Opera house director Richard McWha said there was a constant stream of potential clients requesting information on the venue and a good number of those had hired the property.

Advance bookings were good, he said.

Several events had to be turned away during busier months.
