Flight theme for new cafe Airspresso

Television presenter and pilot Jim Hickey is behind a new cafe which will replace the existing outlet in Queenstown Airport.

Mr Hickey and Craig Macfarlane, owner of restaurants, cafes, bars, a boutique hotel and Ozone Coffee Roasters, bring Airspresso to the airport terminal in early July.

Their cafe has operated in New Plymouth Airport since 2006.

Airspresso Queenstown will be found beside the revamped domestic arrivals entrance. It will replace the existing cafe which will close at the end of April, to be followed by a two-month renovation, expected to be completed before the start of the peak ski season.

The new layout will feature seating for 115 people, a full bar and lounge areas.

Mr Hickey said in a statement their idea of combining creative quality fare, espresso coffee, aviation memorabilia and stories of aviators gave people a sense of place.

''Queenstown is a world leader in adventure and flightseeing, so we're keen to explore ways of showcasing local aviation pioneers in the fit-out design.''

Airspresso's day-to-day operations will be run by business partners Karyn Grant, Justin Bird and Birthe Svendheim, who co-own Joe's Garage cafe in Queenstown with Mr Hickey and Mr Macfarlane.

Queenstown Airport chief executive Scott Paterson welcomed the concept.

''When we went through the tender process we were really excited by Airspresso's ideas and how they would complement the airport's future food and beverage offerings,'' he said.

''Jim brings a strong passion and understanding of Queenstown and the aviation sector to the table, while Craig is a go-getter with a proven track record of success here in New Zealand and London.''
