St Joseph's School pupils stand to benefit from about $10,500 raised by the school's fourth art auction, held every two years, at the Queenstown Memorial Hall, on Saturday night.

About 135 bidders and supporters attended the function, after public viewing during the afternoon.

About 30 New Zealand artists contributed 124 artworks for the live and silent auctions.

There were 50 artworks in the live auction, which was conducted by auctioneer Brendan Quill.

Works by notable names sold for bargain prices, including those by Graham Brinsley, Ivan Clarke and Hope Gibbons.

The highest bid reached $2500 for The Butcher's, a large acrylic painting by Arthur's Pt artist Simon Morrison-Deaker, from his Small Town series.

Co-ordinator Maria Thomson said the auction was a "huge success, with a good crowd.

"We sold over 50% of the work. It was well supported. There was a fantastic quality of work."

Funds raised would be spent on updating the school's computers.
