Children's author Kyle Mewburn, of Millers Flat, (left), next to principal Debbie Dickson, reads from his new book to Remarkables Primary School pupils, after he officially opened their new information centre and library on Friday.
"This is the most exciting adventure playground in the world," children's author Kyle Mewburn told Remarkables Primary School pupils, when he officially opened their new information centre and library on Friday.
Virtually all 132 enrolled pupils in years 0 to 4, as well as staff and parents, eagerly watched Mr Mewburn cut the ribbon.
Children raced through the doors to see the new facility, many for the first time, after the Miller's Flat author and principal Debbie Dickson talked about the importance of creativity and the youngsters writing their own stories.
In a "world premiere", Mr Mewburn read aloud his latest book, which will be published next month.
He also signed the books written by him which were held in the library.
He had encouraged children's development of creative writing on Friday morning and may return as a writer in residence.
The centre and library features 3000 books and three touch-screen reference computers; laptops and iPods are to come.
A convertible seminar room and a staff resource area are next to the library, which is all within the completed administration block of the school.
Nominations for the first elected board of trustees at Remarkables Primary School closed on Friday with six parents and one grandparent entering for five positions.
Fleur Caulton, Karina Gaudin, Duncan Ridd, Paul Rogers, John Stalker, Jeremy Wilson and Fiona Woodham had put their names forward for the three-year term by the close of nominations at noon.
Mr Stalker, treasurer of the school's five-strong establishment board of trustees, was the only one to seek re-election.
Parents will now receive voting forms and the election results will be announced on the day of the school's grand opening.
Mrs Dickson, as principal, and staff representative Darran Ingram will join the board.
Darren Rewi is likely to return as iwi representative.
Trustees will elect a chairman from within their ranks on the day and they take over from the establishment board of trustees on the day of the grand opening.
The completely finished $17.3 million Remarkables Primary School will be officially opened by Education Minister Anne Tolley in a public ceremony on Friday, August 27, at 1.15pm.
Deputy prime minister and Clutha-Southland MP Bill English will attend.
Sir Eion Edgar, founding chairman of Queenstown Resort College and former chancellor of the University of Otago, will be the keynote speaker.
