Skaters may have damaged school

"Shocked" Wanaka Primary School supporters have reacted with dismay at the alleged damage being caused by skateboarders illegally gaining entry to a new school site at Scurr Heights.

Wanaka Primary School board chairman Pete Bullen said he was shocked to find the school grounds had become the new skateboard playground.

An operational onsite CCTV security system had recorded footage of skateboarders using the grounds and property during a period of "several weekends".

"The skateboarders have been illegally entering the construction site and damaging newly plastered walls and the like," Mr Bullen said.

Neighbouring residents to the $21 million school site, which has been under construction during the past 18 months, had contacted him to report the trespassing incidents, Mr Bullen said.

A local security firm has been engaged and anyone on the site would be charged with trespassing and wilful damage, he said.

"I can't believe the lack of respect that some people have for community property. The school is an educational asset for primary school children and not a skate park to be damaged at will," he fumed.

The Primary School board wanted to make it clear that they have given sufficient warning to those involved and, as the site is still under construction, anybody caught on school land will be prosecuted, Mr Bullen said.
