Travel writers convention hopes

Destination Queenstown is hoping the resort will benefit from global publicity as Wellington hosts the Society of American Travel Writers annual convention in November - thought to be worth more than $2.5 million to the capital.

The event, staged for the first time in New Zealand, is expected to attract up to 500 writers from across the United States and Canada with a readership of millions through publications such as National Geographic Traveller, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Conde Nast Traveller, Elite Traveller and The New Yorker, as well as various travel guides and news websites.

DQ chief executive Tony Everitt said the tourism body was looking forward to hosting "this very influential society" in two "famils" - sponsored tours of the resort - book-ending the week-long convention.

"It's an opportunity for the writers to see what we have to offer and hopefully write about it," Mr Everitt said.

Tourism New Zealand chief executive George Hickton said the event would help crack the "massive" and "tough" US media market.
