Greenhouse gas from power drops

New Zealand's production of greenhouse gases from electricity generation dropped 10% in the December quarter compared to a year earlier.

That was despite thermal generation rising 17%.

The first edition of the Ministry of Economic Development's New Zealand Energy Quarterly, published yesterday, also showed coal production falling sharply in 2007.

Gas production lifted during the year, and in the second six months oil and condensate production and exports soared.

During the December quarter, electricity generation produced 1.49 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, almost 10% on the same quarter in 2006.

The main change influencing the figure was the commissioning of Genesis Energy's e3p combined cycle gas turbine at Huntly and the declining use off of coal-fired generation, the quarterly said.

Total energy generation increased 2% to 10,415 gigawatt hours (GWh) in the December 2007 quarter from a year earlier.

Renewable generation accounted for 68% of the total for the latest quarter, down from 72%.
