More than $100,000 raised for slain taxi driver's family

More than $100,000 has been raised for the family of slain Auckland taxi driver Hiren Mohini.

A nationwide appeal for donations was launched by the Taxi Federation after Mr Mohini was killed by a passenger in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden on January 31.

Mr Mohini picked up the man from central Auckland at about 1.12am and drove for eight minutes before he was attacked. He crashed into a tree and his attacker fled.

Barrie White, general manger of the Mr Mohini's former employer, Auckland Co-op Taxis, said the company had been overwhelmed by the public's generosity.

"Everyone recognises the challenges Mr Mohini's family will continue to face well into the future, and the proceeds of this appeal will assist them," he said.

"Not for a minute does anyone believe that any level of financial assistance replaces the loss the family is suffering as the result of the death of a dedicated husband and father, but hopefully it will relieve some of the pressures and burdens."

In addition to the trust fund, an education fund for Mr Mohini's children had been set up by Wilkinson Insurance Brokers.

Meanwhile, police are still seeking the prime suspect in the killing, believed to be an Asian man who has fled New Zealand.

Police were working with several agencies and international authorities after an arrest warrant was issued in February.
