Motorists have been stung by a 3c a litre rise in the price of petrol.

BP, Shell and Caltex all yesterday put up their prices to $2.1899 a litre, the highest level since July 2008, while Mobil put up its prices up today.

The Automobile Association (AA) said today it did not look like petrol prices were going to come down in the near future, and the reality was New Zealand was a very small market in the global industry.

"Motorists should be thinking at this time of driving in a fuel-efficient manner and review their driving styles to cut their petrol bill," AA spokesman Simon Lambourne told NZPA.

The AA had been for some time encouraging motorists to have a smoother driving style and ensuring tyres were inflated properly, among other things, he said, urging drivers to use petrol-saving tips outline on AA's website.

Mobil put up its prices today by 3c a litre on petrol and 5c a litre on diesel, spokesman Alan Bailey told NZPA.

The prices were increased owing to a combination of factors like the increase in product costs and crude oil prices around the region and globally and the NZ dollar weakening, Mr Bailey said.

He said prices in Christchurch had gone up by 5c a litre on petrol and 8c a litre on diesel.

"That would take the prices of unleaded petrol to $2.159 on unleaded petrol and $1.639 on diesel in Christchurch which are still lower than the national level."

Petrol prices in Christchurch have generally been lower by 3c to 5c a litre after the earthquake that struck the city on February 22.
