Plea for new base denied

The Roxburgh Information Centre is staying put, despite a plea for a spacious new base to cater for the expected boost in visitors when two planned cycle trails in the area go ahead.

The centre is located in a corner of the Roxburgh Service Centre, which is the Central Otago District Council's Roxburgh base.

At its meeting this week, the Roxburgh Community Board considered a report on options for relocating the centre, but decided to review the location and operation when the Clutha Gold and Roxburgh Gorge cycle trails are completed.

The trails, from Alexandra to Roxburgh and from Roxburgh to Lawrence, are yet to be constructed. They were among 13 to receive initial government funding from 54 concept trails nationwide as part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project.

Central Otago District Council visitor information centres manager Ingrid Temple wanted the centre to move to the Memorial Hall.

The present location was cramped and inadequate, with the space partitioned off from the service centre but not separate to it, she said.

Developing the Clutha Gold and Roxburgh Gorge trails would bring extra visitors into the district and an increase in the use of the visitor centre, she said.

"Preliminary estimates are that the combined trails should double the number of visitors to the district, compared to the current number who come to ride the Otago Central Rail Trail," Mrs Temple said.

This could add $2 million to $3 million to the local economy and another 50 to 70 jobs.

Moving the centre would significantly boost its profile and increase its use, Mrs Temple said.

It would also ensure that when the new cycle and walking trails were completed, the centre would be ready to cater for the additional visitor numbers, she said.

Board chairman Stephen Jeffery said the board was unconvinced that a move was necessary right now.
