The Dunedin City Council has agreed to let bars to stay open for the first hour of Anzac Day so Aerosmith fans can have a ''nightcap'' after a ''hard day'' of rock'n'roll.

Aerosmith concert promoter Andrew McManus said licences could be extended to 1am ''so revellers can wind down after their hard day'' on April 24.

Council liquor licensing and projects officer Kevin Mechen said it was the first time he could recall the council had allowed Dunedin bars to remain open into Anzac Day.

''The only reason they can stay open is because we have got an event in the city.''

Applications for the extension were being collated and would be counted after the ''cut-off date'' on Friday, he said.

Mr Mechen expected a few bars ''in the middle of town'' to be willing to pay the $64.40 fee for the special licence.

The gates at Forsyth Barr Stadium would open at 2pm for concertgoers. The concert starts at 4pm and will finish at 11pm.

Mr Mechen said concertgoers might want a nightcap and ''police figure they will get back into town about 11.45pm and they've got another hour to have a couple of quiets and to wander off to wherever they are staying''.

Police would oppose any bar's application for a liquor licence extending beyond 1am, he said.
